Turkey celebrated an upset victory
at the World Team Championship. In the final Adnan Yüksel
and Murat Naci Coklu overcame Spain by 5-2 sets. For Turkey it
was their third triumph t Viersen after 2003 and 2004, while Spain
also lost their second final after 1998.
Man of the match in the final was Murat Naci Coklu, who dominated Ruben Legazpi by winning in three straight sets with score lines of 15-7, 15-12 and 15-11; Coklu made his third match point to secure the title. In the match between Adnan Yüksel and Daniel Sanchez the score was 2-2 at this moment. Twice Yüksel took the lead, but both time Sanchez equalled immediately. But this was not enough for Spain to clinch this title for the third time.
Turkey and Spain meet in the final of the World Team Championship.
While Turkey has won its first two finals at Viersen in 2003 and
2004 Spain reached its second final after 1998. In the semi-final
Turkey got the upper hand over Korea by 4-1 sets while Spain booked
the final with 4-2 sets versus the Netherlands.
Match winner for Spain was Ruben Legazpi, who beat Raymond Burgman in three straight sets. 15-6, 15-10 and 15-8 in six, nine and eight innings was the clear result. At this moment Dick Jaspers had held a 2-1 lead over Daniel Sanchez, but the Dutch could not catch the Turks any more.
For Turkey it was veteran Adnan Yüksel who firmly destroyed the freshly crowned World Cup champion Kim Kyung-Roul. Yüksel started with a 15-3 in three innings in the first set and quickly added the next two with scorelines of 15-6 in nine innings and 15-4 in four innings. Between Murat Naci Coklu and Choi-Sung-Won is was 1-1 at this moment so that the Turks had done enough to secure their place at the business end of the tournament.
The final day is underway at Viersen. 24 teams startet on Thursday,
only four are left. The semi-final clash between Spain and the
Netherlands will be a real cracker. Both teams delighted their
fans with fantastic play in the recent days. But also the encounter
between two times champion Turkey and Korea, winner of the bronce
medal in the past two years, promises to be a high quality match.
